About the resources

One of the most effective ways for children to understand mathematical concepts is by using manipulatives. This idea is nothing new, Piaget in 1951 recommended it is a way to understand mathematical concepts , followed by Bruner in the 1960s’ who put the idea that pupils need to go through the stages of concrete, pictorial and abstract.

The most recent Education Endowment Foundation reports on improving mathematics again had the use of manipulatives and the mathematical modelling as a key recommendation as a driver for improving standards at EYFS, KS1, KS2 and into KS3.

In July 2020, the DfE published the ready to progress, one of the key messages within this publication was for schools to have a core set of representations and a range of manipulatives to secure the most important aspects of the English national curriculum for mathematics.

Pegs to Count Up is one of the manipulatives that you could use, it will compliment other resources you have in school such as Cuisenaire rods, place value counters etc.
